On the surface, getting organized is easy. You can keep costs low by purchasing cheap organization supplies like plastic containers with lids, which are extremely versatile. Organizing itself is more or less a three-step process: Get rid of stuff you no longer need, clean, and put everything back in a more logical fashion. But what really makes organizing a challenge for many people has nothing to do with logistics. The problem is how to stay motivated.
Let’s face it; getting organized can be a lot of work, especially if you are starting out with a big mess on your hands. How can you stay motivated? One of the best ideas is to reward yourself for organizing your home and organizing your life. Here are some great ideas for rewards that go way beyond giving yourself a simple pat on the back:
1. Buy fun organizational supplies.
Who says you need to settle for boring organizational supplies? While you probably should make plastic bins for organizing your staple (because they are so cheap and useful), you can certainly reward yourself with some fun, pretty organizational supplies too! This can make organizing more enjoyable. You can also decorate the “boring” organizational supplies you do buy. Organizing can be the start of many fun art projects that can really jazz up your home! Get crafty and see what you can do!
2. Buy yourself (and your family) a nice dinner out.
If you are trying to get kids to help you organize (or maybe a stubborn spouse), you need to come up with a reward that everyone can enjoy. Something like a nice meal out at an expensive restaurant you wouldn’t normally go to is a great reward that can motivate your entire family.
3. Purchase something new you’ve wanted for a while but haven’t had space for.
When you get organized, you free up space, which is one of the best things about doing it! Who knows how much space you could free up? When you get rid of things you don’t need and consolidate the things you do need, you may find yourself with some extra room in your closet for that new dress you’ve had your eye on, or you might have a corner of your room free for a comfy new chair. Buy something special that you have wanted for a while. Consider it making something you want, not something you need.
Getting organized may be a multi-step process, especially if you have a number of rooms to tackle. If that is the case, make sure you give yourself a number of small rewards along the way, not just one big reward at the end. Otherwise you may lose motivation early on and may never get to the finish line. Break up the bigger jobs into smaller, more manageable ones, and just do one thing at a time so you don’t get overwhelmed. Have fun, and enjoy rewarding yourself for a job well done!
