It isn’t easy finding the energy to get things done around the house. And when you are already juggling lots of other tasks—taking the kids to soccer, making dinner for the family, running errands—it can be very hard to get motivated to clean and organize. But a clean and organized home is a much more pleasant place for everyone to be. How do you motivate yourself to get those plastic organizer bins out and start tidying up? Here are some simple tips and tricks.

1. Get things ready the night before. Take a few minute to plan tomorrow. That way you won’t waste valuable morning energy planning instead of doing! Have your plan of action ready and waiting for you so you can jump right in.

2. Get up an hour early. Doesn’t sound like fun, does it? Maybe not, but a lot of people have more focus in the morning, even if they are tired. Plus, when you are tired, your guard is down, and you are actually more likely to do what you planned instead of constructing obstacles and coming up with distractions. And when you are done, it will still be early in the day, and the rest of the day is yours!

3. Go through the motions. It may sound silly, but sometimes if you are feeling unmotivated, simply behaving as if you are can make a difference. Roll up your sleeves and tie back your hair, even if you don’t have to. Act like you’re going to do something big, and then do it.

4. Make sure you have the home organizing supplies you need, like plastic organizer boxes. If you are not giving yourself the tools you need to succeed at organizing, you are not going to feel motivated. It is much easier to feel motivated when you know you have a real shot at success.

5. Set small, achievable, concrete goals. A lot of the time we can’t stay motivated because we have no success to build off of. Often though this is because of the way we frame our organizational goals. When you set yourself up with one huge monumental task like “organize the house,” you are not going to have any small achievements to motivate you to continue, because you will always feel un-accomplished. But if you set yourself up with a lot of small tasks like “organize the bathroom drawer” or “organize the hall closet,” you will regularly experience a sense of achievement. These successes will motivate you to continue.

Yes, it is difficult to find the energy to organize your house, especially when you are already overwhelmed by other commitments. But you can get it done if you take it step by step, give yourself the supplies you need, and jumpstart your day. It won’t happen overnight, but your small accomplishments will carry you forward, and in a year, you may not even recognize your house. It will be organized, clean and beautiful, just the way you always wanted it!
