Even though we’re just heading into winter, it’s really never too early to start thinking about spring cleaning. And if you really want to do a thorough job this year, you will tackle the different storage areas around your home. Most of us have a number of these spaces around the house, and some of them are easy to forget and neglect. Here are 4 storage areas to commit to completely cleaning out and re-organizing in 2024:
1. Your attic.
Chances are your attic is where you store a lot of your old stuff, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t an easily-forgotten storage space! Deciding to organize your attic is a major project, and it may not seem like the most rewarding one, since your attic is a part of your home that you never see. But it can pay off in spades, because if you can free up space up there, you will be able to free up space in the rest of your home when you move the rest of your clutter upstairs! Be sure to stock up on plastic storage containers for this job; you’re going to need them.
2. Your basement.
This one is much easier for most people to remember, because chances are you actually go down to your basement or cellar regularly. Still, it can be a challenge to organize your basement, especially if you have an unfinished basement. The unfinished basement may always look messy, so you may ask yourself, “Why bother?” But again, this is all about freeing up space throughout your home.
3. Your outdoor storage shed.
This storage area can quickly turn into a real mess, especially if you have a small shed which isn’t a walk-in unit. Taking time to get it organized though can be worth it. You may be surprised just how much space you are underutilizing.
4. Your hall closets.
No storage space in the home is more easily forgotten than the hall closet. Oftentimes, we stuff extra linens and seasonal clothing or supplies in these closets, close the doors, and never think of them twice. When we walk past them, we may as well be walking past another wall. But your hall closets are genuinely useful spaces, and if you never find yourself using what is inside them, maybe you don’t really need that stuff. It is time to de-clutter and organize your front hall closet.
Organizing storage areas may not seem like a lot of fun, and it may sound like a lot of work for relatively little reward, but nothing could be further from the truth. Just because you do not usually see these areas in your home, that does not mean that there won’t be a visible result. Remember, once you free up space in these storage areas, you can move stuff from the rooms you do see into those storage spaces. And then you will have a visible result to be proud of—a much cleaner and more organized home with a lot of space for new stuff!
