Do you have an outdoor storage shed? It is a smart idea to check on it before the heavy rains and snows set in this winter. Fall is the best time of year to set aside a day to organize your storage shed. Here are some tips to make sure that everything is ready for the winter and that you are making the best use of the space that you have:
• Try and save the space on the floor of your storage shed for large items (i.e. lawnmowers, if you keep things like that in your storage shed) or boxes. If it is a walk-in unit, leave pathways so that you can get around.
• Implement a tool wall and use hooks to make the most of your wall space. Most of these wall organization solutions are affordably priced and very versatile. You will find that they are useful for a variety of different storage purposes in your shed and around the household.
• Consider adding shelving units. A simple chrome shelving rack can provide you with a more efficient way to use the space you have and keep more items off the floor. Chrome shelving units hold up great to change in humidity and will resist corrosion. They do not gather dust, which is another huge advantage. They are strong and sturdy and can handle plenty of weight.
• Store items in your shed in airtight plastic bins. Weatherproof plastic containers are ideal since they can protect contents from exposure. While a shed obviously provides some level of protection for your items, it can never keep them free and clear of all fluctuations in temperature and humidity. The shed does not include climate control, so adding this extra layer of protection cannot go amiss. Your standard plastic storage container can provide enough protection for most of your possessions, but you may want to invest in extra high-quality weatherproof storage for some electronic items.
• Do a quick check for leaks and consider caulking those you find. A minor leak in your shed is generally not the end of the world, but it can be easy not to notice just how bad your leaks are getting through the winter. The last thing you want is to open the door to your storage shed in the spring and find a puddle of water on the floor—especially if you have some items stored on the floor. Take care of leak now and you can prevent major cleanup and damage next year.
While organizing the storage shed may not be a lot of fun (it can be seriously hard work), it is well worth your time. The supplies you need are minimal and inexpensive, and once your shed is organized and the contents protected, you can rest easy over the winter knowing that your shed is doing its job. Consider turning it into a group effort if you have family members around to help you!
