If you haven’t yet, check out part 1 of our home organization tips to learn about scheduling your time and breaking large tasks down into smaller tasks, as well as some advice for figuring out what to keep and what to donate. Read on to learn even more helpful organization ideas!
• Turn off your TV and eliminate distractions. This is important whether you are doing a quick 15-minute organization round or you are doing a day-long organizational task. Eliminating distractions will help you to make the most of your time. Organizing is also not a good time to be on the phone or using your computer.
• Turn on some music. Just as energetic music can help you to get psyched up for an aerobic workout, it can also get you in the right frame of mind to get your decluttering and organizing done. It makes organization more fun, which makes it feel like less of a chore!
• Choose the right time of day to organize. It can be hard trying to squeeze decluttering and organizing into a busy schedule, but try to do it when you actually have the energy. It does not make a lot of sense to schedule your daily organizing at the end of a hard work day for instance, when all you want to do is kick back in front of the TV.
• Get the right home organization supplies. Clear plastic organizer boxes are perfect for the kitchen, bedroom, bathroom, garage, and other areas of your home. You can use these to get just about anything more organized for a neater appearance. These boxes will protect their contents from the elements and keep everything easy to find. Make sure to purchase a variety of sizes, but think carefully about what you need before you place your order. Unneeded boxes can also add to your clutter.
• Try the four-box method. For this technique, you need four large plastic containers. Label one “recycle,” another “donate,” another “relocate,” and another, “put back.” When you are going through a room or an area in your home, place each item individually into one of the boxes. This forces you to think about each and every item you own. That way you will not simply gloss over certain items that really should be donated or recycled or placed somewhere else.
Decluttering and organizing are both ongoing chores, and you will need to be dedicated to get the results you are looking for. By following these tips, you will take an approach that allows you to work smart as well as hard. You may be surprised just how quickly your home transforms when you stay on task and don’t give up. You could easily see a complete turnaround in just a few months!
