Are you looking for the best home organization tips and tricks? If so, you’ve come to the right place. Oftentimes the reason that we are not successful with organizing our homes and our lives has nothing to do with a lack of commitment. It has to do with the fact that we think of organizing as something that we do just once a year, typically in springtime. But organizing is something that you need to integrate into your life on a daily basis throughout the year for lasting success.
In Part 1, I shared a number of home organizing ideas. Specifically, I shared good habits that you can put into effect throughout the year. Now I would like to share a few more with you. If you haven’t already, be sure to check out Part 1 first.
• File papers as soon as you get them. These may include incoming mail, your children’s schoolwork, tax documents, receipts and more. Have a plastic bin for paperwork set aside for each. It is also a good idea to have a bin set up specifically for papers and documents that you may need to use within the next few weeks. For example, this bin could contain tickets and papers needed for an upcoming business trip. The most important thing to remember is to file everything or throw it out right away. Do not wait! The moment you do, you end up with a stack of unsorted documents on the counter.
• Always clean up after every task, and if you can, do it as you go. Say for example you are cooking a meal. Try and clean up and put away dishes while you are working. Once the meal is finished, tidy up the kitchen right away. The longer you wait, the harder it is to find the energy to get everything back where it belongs. The same goes for desk work in the home office. Put away your papers and supplies right after the task is finished.
• In the mudroom, set up plastic storage containers for small items. That way, when people walk through the door, they have somewhere they can immediately drop their keys and other small objects that otherwise they would throw on top of the counter, the coffee table, or somewhere else where they would contribute to clutter. Have a rule that objects in this container need to be removed within the hour, and placed in their appropriate long-term storage areas. That way the bin will not simply become a repository for miscellaneous items.
Once you turn organizing into a daily habit and not something you ignore most of the year and save for springtime, you will discover that your home is a lot less cluttered throughout the year. In fact, you should also find that overall it is easier and requires less thought and effort to stay organized. That will make those big organizational chores a lot smaller when you actually get around to them! You may even find that some big tasks disappear altogether.
