Getting organized isn’t easy. Even in a small home or apartment it can feel like a daunting task, and in a larger home, it can be tough to know where to begin. Oftentimes we come up with excuses to justify why we haven’t made the progress we would like.
One of those excuses might be this:
“Getting organized is too expensive! I cannot afford all the products I’d need.”
This is a myth. Organizing your home does not have to be expensive! Even if you are on a tight budget, there are plenty of cheap home organization products that you can buy. Not only that, but you probably already have some cheap home organization supplies around your house right now. Many items you already own can be repurposed—so some supplies may even be free!
Here are some cheap home organizing ideas:
• You can use cardboard boxes lying around the house. Don’t like how they look? Cover them in pretty paper and they will look much more exciting.
• Have stuff you need to hang up? Just purchase some hooks to affix to your walls. This is an excellent way to get bag, coats, and scarves off the floor and shelves in your mudroom. Hooks are handy throughout the home for many other purposes.
• Old containers are great for organizing inexpensively. Use Mason jars, old tin cans, old baskets, paint cans and so on. If you don’t have these now, you will later if you just start saving them instead of throwing them away. Why recycle when you can upcycle? Like the cardboard boxes, many of these containers can be decorated so that nobody even recognizes them as re-used containers. Of course, you may want to just stick with the original look. Mason jars have great rustic appeal and are really trendy these days.
• Finally, few supplies beat plastic containers for organizing. They are versatile and can be used in every room of your house. If you change your organization system later, the bins can be repurposed with ease. They are incredibly cost-effective, and like the other containers on this list, they can be redecorated if you do not like their Spartan appearance. Plastic storage containers come in all shapes and sizes, and you can even buy them with sub-dividers. There are even plastic bins for specific purposes, like organizing your craft room!
Finally, here is one more tip to getting organized without spending money (or a lot of it, rather). Do not simply rush to order a lot of plastic bins without taking careful stock of your projects and what you actually need. Make a list first. Odds are you can take care of quite a few needs with old containers you have around the house. Then you can spend only the money you need to on plastic bins. Organizing on a budget is possible, so you can no longer use this as an excuse not to get organized!
