One room in the house which can easily become a cluttered mess is the toy room. If you have children, you know what a mess they can make within a matter of minutes when they get their playthings out. You can help your kids stay organized and clean up after they play by taking some time to organize your kids’ playroom. Doing this will not only make the playroom a more pleasant and enjoyable environment, but it will also help you to teach your children about the value of organization. Children will also learn how to take better care of their possessions, which will keep their toys in better condition. Learning good habits starts at a young age.

Start by going through the playroom and taking an inventory of what’s inside. This is a good time to discard broken toys which might be a hazard to small children, or repair or donate them if possible. If your children have outgrown or rejected any toys, put them in a bag or box and donate them to your local thrift store so that other children can have a chance to play with them. Make sure to ask your children before donating or discarding any items so that they know you respect their space and possessions. Now that you have gotten a lot of the clutter out of the way, the organization task will be easier. This is also a good time to take a few minutes to clean shelves and vacuum the carpet.

Now you are ready to start organizing. First, purchase organizational supplies if you do not have them. Clear plastic bins or color coded plastic containers are both great choices, as are baskets. With clear plastic bins, children can see inside and find the toys they want to play with right away. Color coding is great if you have more than one child, and you want to help them keep their toys separate. Children enjoy things they can feel proprietary about. Each child can choose his or her favorite color. This can also help to reduce sibling rivalry in the toy area.

It is a good idea to label the plastic storage bins for toys with their contents as well, since this can also help children to locate toys. If you have young children, it can also help them to learn about reading while they are learning about organization. Teaching your children about living an orderly life when they are young helps to instill good habits that can follow them into their teen and adult years.

Keeping the toy room organized is a difficult chore, but it is much easier when you have a system in place which is easy for your children to understand. You can teach them how to put toys back where they found them and to take care of their possessions. Responsibility is yet another important skill that comes with organization. And when your children help you keep the toy room organized, it means less time doing all that work yourself
