Most of us live in homes which are less organized than we would like. Whether you are living amid the chaos of clutter or you are simply looking for a way to get more organized, your goals may seem out of reach. But could that be because you are setting unrealistic goals to begin with?
There are a million organization systems out there which you can research online, everything from organize your home in 30 days to organize your home in 15 minutes a day. Some systems will break your back as you struggle to get everything done in one fell swoop. Others rely on an incredible amount of patience on your part since you need to stick with them over a period of years to achieve the results you are looking for.
But I think one of the biggest obstacles that stand in the way of getting your home organized probably is the last thing you think of—and that is the photos and videos you use for inspiration online.
These days the internet is bursting through the seams with mom blogs and organizational blogs. If you spend any length of time at all browsing on Pinterest or YouTube, you will find them. In fact, if you read this blog, I am guessing you spend a lot of time reading up on home organizing tips and tricks.
But there is a problem with these websites, and that is that they present a version of reality which is simply not achievable by the average person. But we see the beautiful pictures of perfectly ordered and aesthetically beautified spaces, and we wonder why we cannot make it happen in our own lives.
But therein lies the mistake: thinking that your situation is the same as the typical organizing blogger’s. Odds are that it is nothing close.
What you need to realize is that many of these blogs and videos are posted with a for-profit motive. Many of these bloggers literally produce those amazing photos and videos for a living. To top it off, it usually is not their only (or primary) source of income. But the first source generally isn’t another job—it is a spouse.
You on the other hand may very well be working a full-time or part-time job. On top of that, you may be juggling other responsibilities, like taking care of your children. You may not have a secondary source of income. Even if you do, between the two of you, you may have a harder time making ends meet.
In short, you are a lot busier with other priorities, and you also have fewer resources on your side. You are not organizing for a living—you are trying to squeeze it into an already over-burdened life. That puts you in a far different situation than a lot of online bloggers. I have more to say about this, so be sure to read onto What You Don’t Realize About Organizing Blogs and Videos, Part 2. My goal here is to give you some valuable perspective you may be lacking!
