What is your current storage solution for your kids’ toys? First of all, hopefully you have one—if you do not, it would be a miracle if your kids can figure out a way to stay organized on their own. Assuming you do have one though, there are probably some ways it could be improved. One easy way to upgrade any storage solution for children’s toys is to incorporate some plastic storage totes with lids.
1. They can be see-through.
When you purchase plastic storage for toys, you have the option of either going with opaque or clear storage totes. There are advantages to both. If you only have one child, I would recommend going with clear plastic boxes for toys. The benefit of these is that they are see-through. This can be particularly helpful if your child is very young, and would otherwise have a difficult time figuring out which boxes contain which toys.
2. They do not break easily.
Another good thing about plastic is that it does not break easily. So if you have a particularly rambunctious child, he or she is not likely to destroy his or her plastic toy containers.
3. They do not wear out or lose their shape too easily either.
On that same note, plastic is a material which is usually tough enough to hold it shape over the long term, assuming it is not subjected to an absurd amount of stress or environmental damage. This is not the case with all other materials. A lot of children for example will store some of their toys in old shoe boxes and the like, but these wear out easily and after a time can start to fall apart. When they do, you can end up with an increasingly messy toy room.
With plastic toy boxes, this problem is prevented entirely. The same boxes you purchase your child as a toddler will probably still be in his or her room a decade later, still serving their purpose and holding up just fine. They can also be repurposed for other uses later, since plastic bins are so very versatile.
4. You can color-code them.
If you do have more than one child, particularly if they share a playroom, I would suggest purchasing opaque boxes in different colors instead of transparent boxes. That way you can assign a color to each child, which will make it easier for your kids to keep their toys separate, reducing occurrences of sibling squabbles. The best way to encourage compliance with this is of course to let each child select his or her preferred color.
You now are familiar with some of the advantages of plastic storage bins for toys. They are durable, hold their shape, and are difficult to break. Transparent bins can help young children to find their toys, while color coded totes can assist siblings in keeping their toys apart. Through this system, you can maintain order in your children’s bedrooms and play areas.
