There are so many countless ways you can use plastic totes for storage around your household to stay neat and tidy. While plastic organizer bins are great for storing your stuff and keeping it out of the way, they are also really handy for decluttering. Decluttering, like organizing, is an ongoing job. Recently I came across a couple of easy decluttering ideas using plastic bins which can help you to keep up with the work.

The first great idea is to have a large plastic storage container which you use to pick up random items around the house which are not in their right places. For example, if you find children’s toys cluttering the living room, or you find craft supplies in the home office, or homework supplies in the kitchen, you can clear them out. Walk around with your plastic tote and grab what you find. Stash everything inside and you will get this stuff immediately out of the way.

You will still have to go back later and figure out where everything belongs, but at least you don’t have all that clutter everywhere in the meantime. You keep your floors and countertops and tabletops clear of random stuff. You no longer have to panic or run around like crazy picking stuff up when you make a last-minute invitation to friends or relatives. Your house will always look neat and clutter-free.

The second great idea I stumbled across is for charity donations and trash. Somewhere convenient, maybe in your mudroom or family command center, set up a couple of plastic bins. Label one for recycling and another for thrift. Add to both bins gradually until they fill up, and then take them to the store. What is helpful about this system is you never have to plan to go through your home looking for things to get rid of. You just add items naturally as you come across them.

In fact, you can even keep a handy donations bin right in your closet! This is a very smart idea if you are actively trying to cut down on your closet clutter. It is so much easier to decide, “Yes, I think it is time to thrift this,” when you can quickly and easily take care of it than it is when you know it is something you will have to deal with later. Once again, when you fill up the thrift bin in your closet, you can take it straight to the charity shop. You can set up bins like these in everyone’s closets if you’d like.

Both of these bin systems are incredibly easy to set up and adjust to using; neither of them requires much preparation; you just need to buy bins large enough to use and find somewhere to keep them. Just make sure you put them in handy, accessible places. These decluttering systems will only work if the bins are convenient. You want to make the process of decluttering as effortless and spontaneous as possible. That way you can keep up with it without even thinking about it.
