There are few physical spaces in your life which are more central to who you are and what you need to accomplish each day than your desk. When your workplace is cluttered, you may find your thoughts are also cluttered, and you may not be very productive. When you have a clean, well-organized workspace, you may find your mind is clearer, and you feel more motivated, efficient, and creative. Whether you need to organize your desk at work or at home, these 4 steps will make it quick and easy!

1. Take everything off the desk and out of the drawers.

First, clear off the top of your desk completely. You can temporarily place items on the floor. If you don’t want to do that, grab a medium plastic storage bin and put it on the floor next to you. Put everything on the surface of your desk in there while you work. You can grab a second bin and place everything from your desk drawers inside of that. It is a smart idea to keep drawer items separate from desktop items so you do not need to re-sort them later. If you are planning on making a lot of changes, that may not be as important.

2. Clean your actual desk.

Think of a clean desk as a foundation for a clutter-free organizational system. Wipe down your desk with an appropriate cleaner (what you use will depend on what your desk is made of), and clean out each of your drawers thoroughly. Wait for everything to dry.

3. Throw out things you don’t need, and store old papers.

Throw away papers you don’t need. Have a lot of old paperwork? It’s time to file that in your filing system, and only keep essential, current papers on or in your desk. Have excess supplies? Take them back to the inventory room at work, or see if anyone else in your household could use your extra pens or your spare stapler.

4. Organize your remaining supplies and put them in the desk.

When you have your supplies and papers down to a bare minimum, you are ready to put them back in your desk. You want to keep your work surface as clear as possible. The desktop is supposed to have plenty of space on it for you to conduct your actual business. If necessary, pick up some small plastic bins for pens, paperclips, and other supplies. This can help you to keep your drawers organized. You may also want to put a small bin on top of your desk with your most frequently used supplies. Try and keep about 70% to 80% of your desktop completely clean.

Now you should have a clean, organized desk. Organizing your desk at home or at work may take you an hour or more, but it will be worth it once the task is complete and the clean, empty surface of your desktop gleams invitingly back at you. You’ll find that your actual work goes more smoothly and that you can accomplish more each day when you sit down and pull out your chair. Your boss at work will probably recommend you as an example to others!
