Considering how popular tiny houses are right now, it is somewhat surprising to me that I haven’t yet written up a series on tiny house organization ideas. Whether or not you live in a tiny house, learning how to organize in a small space (most tiny houses are around 500 square feet or even less) teaches valuable organizing principles which can be applied anywhere. So let’s talk about some ways you can use plastic bins in a tiny house.

1. Configurable storage
With tiny houses, a lot of the storage solutions for small spaces are just built right into the structure of the home. But plastic storage bins for small spaces are still quite useful, because unlike those built-in storage spaces, they are configurable.

In other words, you can relocate and rearrange them. This can be very handy if the tiny house itself happens to be re-configurable (a growing trend for the sake of customization and convenience).

You probably do not live in a configurable tiny house, but the benefits of configurable storage can extend to any home. In fact, if you live in a mid- to large-sized house or apartment, you have a lot of options for reconfiguring your space. So take advantage of them. It is easy to pick up plastic bins and move them. It certainly saves a lot of time since you do not have to move their contents individually.

2. Closet storage
You see a lot of plastic containers in tiny house closet storage—which is not a surprise. Plastic bins are great for organizing odds and ends, and can easily be rearranged as you acquire and part with different clothing and accessories. So if you have a small closet, make ample use of them.

3. Under the bed or floorboards
Many tiny house beds have built-in storage underneath, but some simply have cubbies, shelves, or empty space. Plastic containers work great in these spaces. If your bed does not have built-in storage but can be hoisted up—or it has empty shelves or cubbies—you can use this same solution.

4. In the kitchen or bathroom
Both the kitchen and bathrooms are environments which are regularly subjected to wet conditions. In the kitchen, it is common to put away utensils which are not fully dry, and in the bathroom, everything can get damp when the shower is running.

In tiny houses, plastic containers are perfect for holding items in the kitchen and bathroom and providing a layer of protection for cabinets and shelves. That is true in any kitchen or bathroom however, even one where you have more space. So use plastic bins in both rooms regardless of your home size.

Now you know a few ways in which you can effectively use plastic containers for storage in a tiny house, or any other domicile for that matter. Once you stock up on them, you will probably come up with a lot of other uses for them since they are incredibly versatile!
