Those in retail often breathe a sigh of relief around this time of the year, because this is when the sales really stream in. Of course, that also means that you have to do a lot of extra work to make the most of the opportunity. A big part of that is thinking of fall retail display ideas. Whatever ideas and themes you do decide to go with, here are a few best practices to make sure that your displays really glow.
1. Use autumn colors, but try and think beyond just shades of orange and brown.
Orange and brown are the colors most commonly associated with autumn, along with tans, yellows, and reds. But there are other colors which also can work well in a fall palette.
In fact, think about any colors which are considered to be “autumn” colors by fashion designers and makeup artists. This can even include shades of purple or green, even certain warm blues. Finding ways to work these colors in can provide your displays with a more original look and feel than your competitors’ displays.
2. Use natural materials in your retail display fixtures.
When people think of autumn, they think of warmth. So you should use “warm” materials in your displays—wood shelves, baskets, and other natural “homey” materials. Metal and plastic are too cold and contemporary to fit with the theme or the color scheme.
3. Warm lighting can help to bring out fall colors and create an inviting atmosphere.
Replace cold white lighting with lighting with a more yellow hue. This will help to make the colors pop and infuse the whole display with warmth. Cute decorative table lamps and other aesthetically pleasing light fixtures can add a nice touch.
4. Make use of clever props.
Use props to tell a story with your displays. These can include the obvious (leaves, pumpkins, etc.), or it could be some less obvious things—mugs with cute slogans on them (perhaps about hot chocolate), or anything else you could associate with fall, shorter days, and cooler weather. The goal is always to help customers picture themselves using your products during the fall and upcoming winter seasons.
5. Keep it simple.
It is particularly easy for a fall retail display to become overcrowded, especially in the window. This is because there are so many fun objects we associate with fall, and we also associate autumn with abundance. But it pays off sometimes to go for a display which is extremely basic. A more elegant minimalist approach keeps the focus on the products you are trying to sell—the real abundance that you have to offer buyers.
You now have some fall retail display tips to help you put together beautiful displays in your windows and throughout your store. If you do a good job, you will attract pedestrian traffic from outside and direct customers through your shop, drawing their attention to key products you are trying to move. The result will be fall retail sales!
