Cleaning house is something many people dread—but everybody looks forward to living in a clean, well-organized space. The chores won’t do themselves, however. We focus a lot on the practical aspects of cleaning and organizing here: how to organize your to-do lists, what household organization products you need to buy, and how to get family members involved. One thing we don’t talk about enough is how to make household enjoyable. Here are some quick tips for getting yourself motivated and actually having fun as you clean house this year!

1. Motivate yourself with music.

Organizational chores are always easier if you can get yourself energized. Just like some driving beats can get you out on the dance floor, they can also motivate you to get out your dust mop and donation bags and go to town. Upbeat, energetic music that you would exercise to usually works perfectly for de-cluttering.

2. Think of the weight you’ll lose.

Cleaning, de-cluttering, and organizing is hard physical work, make no mistake! You’ll get your heart rate going, and after a week of spring cleaning, odds are you will actually lose some weight. So if you’ve been struggling to reach your spring weight loss goals, look at cleaning house as a 2-in-1 solution. You’ll have a clean living room and you’ll be ready for beach season.

3. Buy fun and satisfying organizational supplies.

Look at cleaning and organizing as an excuse to purchase fun home organization supplies. Purchase color coded plastic containers and come up with a fun labeling system. Many people discover that once they start really getting into organization tasks, they become passionate about organizing.

4. Spend time with family.

Get your spouse and kids involved in organizing the home if applicable. You will have a lot more fun organizing with your family than doing it all by yourself. Look for ways to turn organizing into a game with your children, instead of an unwelcome chore. You may find that you enjoy cleaning that way just as much as they do!

5. Reward yourself for your hard work.

One great way to make any tough task more approachable is to promise yourself a reward at the end of it! Once you achieve a household organization goal and mark it off your to-do list, reward yourself and your family with a nice meal or a fun activity or purchase that everyone can enjoy. Just knowing that all your hard work is going to result in being able to enjoy something you would have otherwise skipped can make the chore more pleasant.

Even if you don’t look forward to cleaning and organizing now, you may very well discover that you enjoy it once you take a few steps to make it more fun for yourself. Look at getting your home in order as a chance to spend fun quality time with your family. Turn on some motivational music to get yourself energized, and enjoy all the rewards that come with getting your house organized!
