Most of us do a lot of cleaning and organizing year round—at least when we are on track. But why not get ahead of schedule this year and take on some of your winter organizing projects early? Following are a few cleaning and organizing tasks for winter which it can be helpful to get out of the way as soon as possible. If you can, try and take care of these while the leaves are still turning!

1. Get the mudroom ready for winter weather.

You really cannot get going too soon on organizing your mudroom. The reason is that before you know it, the rain, snow and hail is going to start coming in. When that happens, family members are going to start tracking in slush and mud.

If they have nowhere to put their dirty boots, all of that muck is going to get all over the floor (and possibly the furniture). So the sooner you get a set of storage bins for the mudroom in there, the fewer messes you are going to have to clean up. You should also get some plastic organizing bins for mittens, scarves, hats and the like.

2. Give your house a thorough cleaning.

Winter is a great time to give your house a top-to-bottom cleaning, but why wait? If you get the house clean during fall, you will be able to heave a sigh of relief knowing that it is in order for your winter holiday parties.

3. Check on your floors.

While you are cleaning, pay close attention to the state of any wood flooring you have. When people track mud and rain into the house, that can compromise the integrity of your flooring. So if your floors are already in questionable shape, they could take quite a beating. Refinish them if needed in advance so that they can withstand the wear and tear of winter.

4. Declutter and organize your closets and drawers.

The holidays are a time for giving and receiving gifts. If you expect to receive a lot of incoming items this holiday season, you probably should be clearing out space for them in advance. So this is the perfect time to take what you do not want or need anymore to the thrift store. That way you will not be struggling to declutter and tidy up after the holidays.

5. Have your children declutter for the holidays.

While you are at it, ask your children to go through their things and likewise declutter what they do not need. Take toys that are no longer played with to the thrift store. On that note, if you have children who habitually do away with old toys and replace them with new ones, you might want to consider cutting back on new toys during the holidays. Consider purchasing immaterial gifts instead, such as a family vacation where you can create lasting memories.

Now you know some winter organizing tasks which are helpful to get out of the way in fall—or even during late summer in future years if you get the chance. Good luck with your winter chores!
