Are you working on decluttering your house fast? If so, you may be in a rush to get rid of all the items you no longer want or need. Your first thought is probably to take them to the dumpster.
But before you do that, you should strongly consider taking them to the thrift store. While that may not seem like the easiest option for what to do with stuff after decluttering, it is the best. Here are a few reasons why:
1. It is less work than you think.
2. You are reducing the waste in landfills.
3. Someone somewhere really wants and needs the items you do not.
Let’s go over a few more reasons why thrifting is the best way to get rid of stuff you don’t need.
4. Objects have intrinsic worth.
Another reason why you shouldn’t throw away usable items is that they have intrinsic value. Materials, time, creativity, and human resources have gone into making them. This means that whether you want or need them or not, they have objective worth. For this reason, they deserve a chance to find a happy home.
5. Helping others creates happiness.
Studies have shown that helping others can literally help us feel happier in our own lives. When you thrift items you don’t need, you are making them available at very low prices to people who may not have the means to purchase them at full cost. That is a generous act.
If you start making a habit out of taking your unwanted items to the thrift store, you may very well find that it lifts your spirits and makes you feel good about yourself.
6. Some financial value may come back your way.
There are thrift stores that will give you discounts for purchases in-store anytime you drop off items of your own. You also are able to write off your donations on your taxes, which can really add up if you end up thrifting a lot! So even if you are not moved by altruistic motives, you should appreciate the chance to save money around tax time.
7. You never know what you might find at the thrift store.
Finally, one more reason to go and drop off your clutter at the thrift store is that it gives you a chance to look around and hunt for cool bargains yourself. If you are used to shopping in department stores, you may not even realize what you are missing. Thrift stores offer great deals and an exciting and unusual selection of merchandise, including a lot of antiques and vintage items.
Plus, what do you do after you declutter? Look for some new stuff, probably. After all, you did free up all that space. At the thrift store, you can find some amazing treasures to reward yourself for all of your hard work!
I hope you enjoyed learning about all the reasons you should thrift your items instead of throwing them out. When you donate, you do your part to reduce waste, help others, and help yourself. It’s fast and easy, and once you get used to it, you won’t ever be tempted by a dumpster again!
