Looking for ideas for decluttering and organizing your home in 2018? A great place to start is with “hidden” clutter zones which are easily forgotten and neglected throughout the year. In Part 1, I talked about the following hidden clutter areas:

1. The Mudroom
2. Kids’ Schoolwork
3. Small Under-the-Sink Storage Zones
4. The Pantry

Now let’s talk about a few more hidden spots to declutter for the New Year!

5. The Spice Cabinet
Once you have taken care of decluttering the pantry, it is time to tackle the spice cabinet. Like the pantry, the spice cabinet has a way of going overlooked for long periods of time.

Reach around in the back, and you will doubtless find containers with spices which have become caked together, not to mention plenty of half-used or mostly-empty spice bottles which you may as well finish using or throw away so you can free up more space. Once you do, it will be so much easier to find what you need while you are cooking!

6. Junk Drawers
Most houses have more than a few junk drawers scattered around. You may have junk drawers in your bedroom, home office, or even in your kitchen or another room of your house.

It’s time to organize your junk drawers. Pull everything out of them, wipe them down, and put back only what you need. Not only will this project help you save space, but it may also help you recover some items you assumed were lost!

7. Medicine Cabinets
Medicine cabinets, rather like pantries and spice racks, tend to accumulate clutter. Search through the back of your medicine cabinet or the higher shelves, and you may very well find a lot of expired medications and vitamins which you never ended up using.

Throwing out even a few bottles can really help you free up space. It can also help you stay safe and healthy, since you don’t want to take expired medications on mistake.

8. Under-the-Bed Storage
One more spot in the home which can easily escape your notice while you are doing your regular cleaning and decluttering activities is the storage area which you may have under your bed. Because this area is low to the ground and you may seldom actually look under your bed, you may forget it exists at all.

Items in this area can become quite dusty, especially if you do not have any sort of drawers or bins under the bed. Furthermore, you may stow items underneath the bed without much thought, just to get them out of the way. So you could be surprised at what you find down there.

You now have a few ideas for decluttering your home in 2018. Many of these hidden clutter zones are relatively small and contained, making each of these projects approachable even with limited time and energy. Whether you declutter one or a few of these spots, you will be on your way to a cleaner, more organized 2018!
