It is now 2019, which means it is time to get organized for the new year. This is right around when people love to make big New Year’s resolutions, but seldom follow through on them. And that is understandable—getting organized is always a big chore!
That is why I came up with this list of 8 hidden clutter areas you can tackle in your home this year. Even if you just take care of one of them, you will find it makes a big difference in your life. And even if you cannot manage to organize your whole home, surely you can take on one small project, right?
All of these are spots in your house you can easily forget to organize for years. But once you have them in order, life will go more smoothly.
1. The Mudroom
Wait, how could you forget to organize the mudroom? It is hardly a hidden area in your home. You pass through it every single day, usually multiple times a day. You would notice if it was disorganized, wouldn’t you?
Well, not necessarily. The fact that you do walk through it every day, usually in a rush on your way in or out, means that you may not pay as much attention to it. You are too busy worrying about other things to prioritize the mudroom. Because you would not expect to miss the obvious, you actually do.
That is why things can pile up fast in the mudroom—and messes can easily get out of hand. So this year, plan to declutter your entryway and get it organized.
2. Kids’ Schoolwork
Another hidden clutter “area” in your home is your kids’ schoolwork. This may actually be a problem in multiple parts of the home—your child’s desk, perhaps your child’s closet or drawers, and perhaps even your own drawers.
Your child should be the one who takes care of this chore rather than you, but you can still resolve this year to help out if it is needed. If nothing else, you can provide some incentive to motivate your kid to get the job done.
3. Small Under-the-Sink Storage Zones
Another storage area that is easy to forget is the small space under the kitchen or bathroom sink. Organize under the sink this year and you should find it not only helps you clear up clutter, but also makes it easier for you to clean the kitchen or bathroom on a regular basis and get other daily chores done over the course of the year.
4. The Pantry
When is the last time you decluttered your pantry and wiped down your shelves? For a lot of us, this task slips under our radar for months, and we end up with lots of half-empty boxes and containers piling up, many of them full of expired foods. This is usually worst with the hard-to-reach shelves up at the top. Get your pantry cleaned out this year and enjoy freeing up a lot of space in your kitchen.
