Wondering what to make with a plastic container? If you have some extra plastic storage containers laying around and are looking for some creative ideas for repurposing bins, there are plenty of them out there just waiting for you. Let’s take a look at 8 unusual uses for plastic bins!
1. Build a garden feature in the ground.
One amazing thing you can do with a large plastic tub in the garden is dig a hole in the ground, set the bin down inside, and then place paving stones around it and rocks inside to conceal its true nature. Add some water plants and fill it up with water, and you have a fancy garden feature.
2. Start worm composting.
Did you know it is possible to construct a plastic bin worm composter? There are quite a few advantages for gardeners in going with this as a composting method. It doesn’t take up a lot of space, it is very inexpensive, and it is far from time-consuming to maintain. Once the system is set up, your worms will begin producing safe, organic compost right away. As a bonus, it can be a lot of fun feeding the worms and watching them flourish.
If you are interested in learning how to do this, you will find a series of worm composting articles in our blog archive. This series details steps and supplies and also explores the benefits of worm composting with plastic bins in more detail.
3. Hide a power strip.
Back inside the house, there are quite a few other unusual ways you can use plastic containers. Have a lot of cords and power strips in your home office or entertainment center? If you find the power strips unsightly, or just want to contain them so that the cords are less likely to be pulled out, you can conceal them inside plastic bins.
You do need to put slots or holes into the bins for this purpose, but they certainly can do a lot to make your electronics setups look neater. They may fill a safety role as well; you do not have to worry quite as much about spilling beverages on power strips when they are sheltered inside plastic bins.
4. Build a bench.
Feeling ambitious? Amazingly enough, you can actually construct some basic furniture items out of plastic bins. I have seen one project where plastic bins are used as a base for creating a patio bench. The idea is to surround the bins with reed fencing, and then put some flat cushions on top.
If you do a good job with this, you can hide the bins from sight entirely. They are not particularly sturdy seating, but in a pinch, they might work fine for temporary extra seating for a party, or for kids’ benches.
As you can see, there are some very unusual, creative, and unexpected projects you can do involving regular plastic bins. Looking for even more exciting and surprising ideas? See 8 Unusual Uses for Plastic Bins You’ve Never Thought Of, Part 2.
