Keep your items organized according to what they are. For example, if you run a large department store, have shelving areas for each of the categories in your department store. Clothing should be in one area of the stockroom, housewares in another, hardware in a different location, and so on. Organize each item according to type, and then organize by other criteria. For example, all shirts could be in one part of your clothing storage, and then all blue shirts within a smaller section.
You also should get some bins that can serve as employee cubbies. Employees usually leave their personal items in the stockroom while they are on the job. You want to keep personal possessions of employees away from your merchandise so no one can get confused. Set up a cubby system with lockers or stackable cubes. This will keep employees possessions from cluttering your stockroom or confusing other workers. Once your stockroom is organized, your employees will be able to quickly and easily find what they’re looking for, which means that items on the sales floor will be replaced in a timely fashion. Customers will be able to find what they’re shopping for and you’ll make more sales.
