• Purchase a tool cabinet. A storage cabinet with doors is a great choice for a garage, because you can keep your tools inside in plastic bins, but close the doors when you aren’t working on projects for a neat, clutter-free look. Others in your household will appreciate it, and anytime you are ready to get back to work, you can just open the cabinet and access all your tools and supplies. These units can have additional bins inside the doors, making for even more storage! They offer faster access than those traditional red cabinets with the drawers you probably are used to seeing, since you can see everything in front of you at once when you open up a storage cabinet with doors.
• Get your accessories and manuals organized. Consider a larger plastic bin for your manuals, or even a filing cabinet system. Use small plastic or glass jars for odds and ends, or just designate some of your plastic bins for these items.
Organizing a tool shed or a garage can be a full day task or even a multi-day task, so be prepared for some work ahead of you. You can be sure though that once the job is complete, you will have a much easier time finding what you need for future projects. You can spend more time building and repairing and less time worrying about what happened to your tools or whether or not you need to run to the hardware store to pick up the right size nut or bolt. Ultimately that means getting more done and having more fun, and you’ll also be showing more respect to your tools and your work by keeping things organized.
