If you are struggling to figure out how to get organized around the house, you will sometimes be tempted to throw in the towel and give up completely. It’s common to start out the year with big goals (typically your New Year’s resolutions), and then fail when it comes time to follow-through. Maybe you manage some spring cleaning, but then you end up tiring yourself out in the process, and give up for the rest of the year.

What do you tell yourself to justify quitting? If you live in a small space, you may believe in the following myth:

“Some spaces are just too tiny to get organized. It is always going to be cluttered in a small apartment.”

This is simply not true. There are plenty of tips for organizing small spaces. Here are just a few:

• One of the best organizing secrets that work is to break one room down into “mini-rooms.” So say you live in a studio apartment and everything is in just the one room. Section off different areas for different purposes—a sitting area, a “home office” area, and so on. Best of all, if you do work in your home, you can claim a tax deduction on the home office!

• Invest in furniture that can perform double duty or which offers hidden storage underneath. You can also find furniture which has a “nesting” function. For example, you can buy a bedside table which has a smaller table underneath that you can pull out and use and then push back in when you are done with it.

• Make use of your wall space, including high up along the ceiling. Installing high shelves is a great way to draw clutter away from eye-level and free up space through the middle of the room.

• If you can, try to stick with the same colors of furniture as you use for your walls. If your walls are painted white, stick with white furniture and white containers. They will “blend in,” which will help to create the illusion that there is more open space. If your walls are another color, see if you can find more items in that color. You might not be able to match your furniture to unusually-colored walls, but you can match your plastic storage containers if you buy them in the same hues.

• Consider investing in a storage unit. If you have the budget for it, this is a great way to instantly free up a ton of space in your home!

As you can see, you can no longer use living in a small space as an excuse not to get organized. Organizing a small space can be quite tricky, but with these tricks on your side, you can do it! Just start with one area at a time and take it day by day. You will be surprised by how quickly it can all fall into place if you are dedicated to your task!
