Pulling out your warm winter blankets, coats and clothes from the hall closet or the attic? If so, you may very well find yourself with some empty plastic bins—leaving you with the question of what to use them for during the fall and winter. Well, what is awesome about plastic totes is that you can use them for pretty much anything around the house, so there are plenty of ways you can repurpose them this autumn. Let’s take a look at a few different ideas.
1. Store your summer clothes.
Just as there are a lot of warm winter clothing items you have no use for over the summer, there are doubtless plenty of summer clothes you do not really need during the fall and winter. You probably are not going to wear shorts or short skirts for example, or swimwear, unless you go to the pool. A lot of people also prefer to exchange bright colors for muted, darker shades in autumn. So there are a lot of clothing items which you can store for the fall and winter.
You can just put these right back in the plastic storage bins for clothes which you previously used for your winter attire. Keep them in the closet or the attic until spring. Next year, you can take out your summer clothes and put your winter attire back inside.
2. Stow away summer gear and pool toys.
Especially if you have kids, you may have a lot of summer toys and gear lying around. You also might have pool floats and the like. Standard plastic totes work great as storage bins for sports equipment and other summer gear. These can go in the garage, shed or attic until next year.
3. Keep hats, gloves, mittens and scarves tidy in the mud room.
Plastic bins for storage do not always need to be used to put items away; they can also be useful for keeping items neat and tidy which you use every day. In your mudroom, you may have hats, mittens and so forth piling up on your shelves. All you need to keep these items neat is one or more plastic totes for storage. You can get away with one if there are just one or two people in your household. But if you have kids, you probably should get several—one for each person. These totes can also be used for purses, backpacks and so on.
I also suggest that you consider using additional totes for winter boots and shoes. Put them where it is easy to just toss the boots in from the door. That way you discourage kids from tracking in mud. Get one tote for each kid; that way they won’t complain about their siblings getting (more) mud on their boots.
