When you need a paperclip or a red pen, do you find yourself going to the office inventory room instead of simply pulling open your desk drawer? It is easy for desk drawers to get out of control. We toss paperclips and pens and binder clips and even papers inside without really thinking. The desk drawer is convenient—until of course it becomes so overburdened that you can hardly get it open, much less find what you need inside.
How to Organize Your Office Drawer
Ready to organize your desk drawers? Here is a simple system to rid yourself of disarray for once and for all so that your desk drawers can finally serve their purpose.
1. First, empty everything out.
For a lot of people, this is the hardest part! It can be intimidating to pour everything out of your office drawers, because you know how much work it is going to be sorting thorough everything and putting it back. But just do it! If you do not take this step, you will never do a really through job. You will cling to old methods which aren’t working instead of inventing a new system from the ground up which will work.
2. Clean your drawers and line them.
This is a great time to clean your drawers. Wipe them down, wait for them to dry, and then line them so they look nice. A decorative liner for your drawer is a wonderful way to personalize your workspace without going overboard.
3. Come up with a system.
When it comes to DIY desk drawer organization, you need to have a system. Think carefully about what types of supplies you are going to have in the drawers. What will you need to access only once or twice a week? What will you need to reach for every day? Start thinking about a layout which will streamline your workspace and boost your productivity.
4. Buy some drawer organizers.
At this point you are going to need to purchase drawer organizers. Small plastic containers for drawers are perfect for storing pens, pencils, erasers, paperclips, staples, and other odds and ends. Get containers with a variety of dimensions so that you have smaller and larger compartments as needed.
5. Set up logical compartments and put back in only what you really need.
Here is the other part which is difficult for a lot of people—don’t put everything back in your desk drawer. You do not need two staplers or five pens or pencils. Take back everything you are not going to use on frequent basis to the supply room. Just as you want to strive to keep the surface of your desk as clean as possible, you are going to want to keep your drawers as roomy as you can.
Getting your office drawers under control is a chore—you can expect to take a couple of hours for a total desk drawer makeover. But once your drawers are organized, you will find it so much easier to do your work each day, and a lot more pleasant too!
