Thinking about moving into a tiny house? In this series, I explore ideas for organizing small spaces which are ideal if your entire living space measures 500 square feet or less. These same ideas are totally useful in larger spaces as well, so even if you just want to free up space in a mid-sized home, you should find them helpful.

If you do live in a tiny house, your bathroom is one of the smallest rooms of the entire dwelling. In fact, it probably is more like a compartment than a “room” per se. You may barely have room to stand at the sink or in the shower.

That means you have to get ridiculously clever when it comes to small bathroom storage ideas. Let’s go ahead and check out a few genius ideas which would work even in a tiny house bathroom—and which would definitely free up a lot of space in a bigger bathroom as well.

• Put the washing machine in the bathroom. Living in a tiny space, and have the luxury of moving your washing machine or dryer? Think about relocating one of them to the bathroom. It might sound strange to add something to a tiny room when you are trying to open up space, but the top of it can function as a shelf, so it is pulling double-duty. Meanwhile, you get it out of another space in your house, and free up floor space in a larger room where you spend more time.

• Build shelving around the toilet. Think about constructing shelves or cabinets around your toilet. A few shelves above your toilet works great, or you can add shelves or cabinets to either side as well. Either way, all of that space goes to waste if you do not use it, so make the most of it. With certain composting toilets, you might also be able to add storage underneath the toilet.

• Get a bathtub installed which includes storage. Did you know that you can buy bathtubs which come with storage underneath? Be sure to also pick up some small plastic bins for bathrooms. You can use these to keep the items you store dry.

• Make use of hanging storage. This is a great solution if you have tiny shelves or no shelves at all inside your shower. You can use these to store other supplies in your bathroom as well.

• Put in a shelf over the door if you have room for one. Most people totally ignore this space, which is a big mistake!

You now have some ideas for organizing small bathrooms. Stay tuned for future articles which help you learn how to organize small bathroom sinks, countertops, closets, and more.
