If you look around on Pinterest and websites dedicated to clever organizing solutions for your home, you may notice that a lot of people like to remove the drawers from their chests of drawers and replace them with plastic storage containers with lids. You might wonder what the point of this is, assuming none of your drawers are actually broken. Why go to all that trouble to remove one storage solution just to replace it with another similar solution?

1. Plastic bins have more give.

First of all, do you have drawers which are stuffed full with socks and underwear, and simply do not have any give in them at all? If so, depending on your situation, that could be putting a lot of strain on either your furniture or the inside of your wall (if for example you live in a mobile home where your chest of drawers is built right into your wall). It also may destroy the drawers themselves given enough time.

Plastic bins have more give in them than drawers. This means that they are less likely to crack under the strain of being overstuffed, and may also put less strain on furniture or walls.

2. You can change the size of your drawers and customize your entire layout.

Usually with a chest of drawers, all of your drawers are going to be the same size and shape. But wouldn’t it be better if you had different sizes of drawers for different items you need to store?

If you remove your drawers, you can also remove the hardware inside and replace it with a different system of hardware based on your needs. You can add or remove shelves as you wish, and then you can put in larger and smaller bins as needed. That way you have a customized layout which is perfect for any purpose!

3. You can see inside plastic bins (great for crafting).

Is your chest of drawers located in your craft room? If you keep your supplies in there right now, you know how annoying it is that you have to get up and pull out your drawers and search around to find what you need. It is so easy to forget which supplies are in which drawers, especially if you have a ton of materials.

But with a system of plastic bins, you never have to worry about that again. Invest in some clear plastic totes, and you will be able to see their contents without even opening them up. If you still want to, you can add labels, but you will probably find that they are not even necessary. You should find this suggestion very helpful as a craft room storage idea, and may find it useful in other areas of your house as well.

Now you know several great reasons to think about replacing your drawers with plastic containers for storage! Be sure to read onto Part 2 to find out even more reasons why this is a smart home organizing idea.
