Thinking about hiring a home organizer, or someone to help you get your workspace organized? If so, you will probably be spending several hundred dollars, and you will be making major changes to how you live or work. That means that you are going to want to do some serious research to make sure you are picking the right person for the job.

Following are some steps to take to make sure that you find a professional organizer who will fit your needs.

1. First, understand what you hope to accomplish by hiring a professional organizer.

If you do not understand your own organizing goals, how can you expect to find a professional who is going to be able to help you achieve them? Identify your goals and needs first, then start contacting prospective organizers. You may want to write everything down in a list so that you do not miss anything when you speak to the pros you are considering.

2. Read reviews and ask for referrals.

The next thing you can do is look up online reviews for different home organizers for hire. You also can talk to family and friends and see if anyone has any personal experiences (good or bad) with various organizers in the area.

3. Choose an organizer that specializes in the area you need to organize.

If you’re trying to organize a home office, it doesn’t make sense to choose to work with a professional who has very little experience with home offices, and focuses mostly on living rooms or bedroom closets. Similarly, you would not want to pick someone who usually organizes business spaces to help you figure out your bathroom.

4. Pick an organizer who can work with someone with your specific psychological needs.

Finally, perhaps the most important thing to recognize when you are looking for a professional organizer is that not everyone is going to necessarily share your organizing philosophy.

For example, if you actually like a bit of clutter around you, you probably do not want to work with the total neat freak or minimalist who insists that you have a major clear-out. On the other hand, if that is your philosophy, you should look for someone who understands it and can cater to your requirements.

Also, if you are not neurotypical, you might want to choose a professional who has some experience working with clients who share your neurological wiring (OCD, ADD, ASD, etc.). These can greatly impact the way that you organize and function on a day-to-day level, and someone who does not understand your needs will not be able to help you organize around them.

This is particularly vital if you have a strong need for routine. Changing your routines is already a big disruption. You want to avoid working with someone who does not respect the challenges this imposes on you.

These tips should help you to pick the right professional organizer for your needs. But I still have a few more tips to share, so be sure to read on to How to Choose a Professional Organizer, Part 2.
