For many people just starting out with home organization, one of the big deterrents can be cost. With entire stores set up to provide home storage containers, it is easy to imagine that you will be spending hundreds of dollars just buying organizational supplies. If you are smart, though, and just a little bit creative, you can save a lot of money on organization supplies. Here are some cheap organizing ideas which can work great in your home!

1. Old food jars

Have any old jars lying around from salsa or sauces? Those jars, cleaned out, with the labels removed, can be great for storing a variety of different things. They can be handy in the kitchen, and they are also great for things like makeup brushes on your dressing table. They’re excellent for painters to store their brushes or jewelry artists to store beads. There are dozens of different uses for them, and best of all, they won’t cost you anything.

2. Baskets

Baskets are not expensive, you can put just about anything in them, and they look nice. They have more of an old-fashioned, homey vibe than a lot of other organizational supplies, and can give your home a warmer ambiance. Many baskets look ornamental, which allows you to camouflage your organizational solution as a decorative accent.

3. Plastic bins

There is a reason you see huge racks of plastic storage bins anytime you walk into an organizational store, or a department store with a home organization department. They are some of the best, cheapest, and most versatile organization supplies you are ever going to find.

Cheap organizing containers can be used for pretty much anything you can think of. They come in every size (small, medium and large), and you can purchase them in any color of the rainbow (or transparent so you can see inside). They stack up easily (especially stack and hang bins, designed for that very purpose), and they don’t take up a lot of space in your home. They can be perfect for the workplace as well. You can get open-faced plastic bins, bins that tip out, and bins that seal with a lid on top. There are so many different variations for different purposes.

You can easily get started organizing your house on a shoestring budget. One of the best ways to save money is by starting out with an inventory of what you need to get organized. You probably should tackle this one room at a time, or you will get overwhelmed. For each room, start by de-cluttering, getting rid of stuff you don’t need. Then think about whether you have any free organizational supplies already handy (like jars). Then figure out how many plastic bins you might need, head to the store, and pick up your organizational supplies. You’ll be organized before you know it, and any overflow you have in terms of extra bins you didn’t need can be useful in the next room you organize.
