Whether you are just getting started in the world of retail and visual merchandising ideas, or you have been merchandising for some time but are unhappy with your current setup, there may come a time when you need to shop for new retail display cases and fixtures. There are two main types of retail display fixtures: those designed for your walls, and those which stand on your floors. In A Brief Introduction to Retail Display Equipment, Part 1, I introduced you to retail wall displays. Now I will introduce you to retail floor displays.
• Clothing racks. There are numerous different types and configurations of clothing racks you can purchase to stand on your retail floor. Clothing racks are great because they don’t take up a lot of space and they don’t occlude line-of-sight the way that shelves do.
• Shelving. Shelves have the disadvantage of blocking line of sight throughout your store, but for many types of products, they make more sense than racks. In fact, some types of products need to be placed on shelves. There are so many different options for shelving. Steel or wire shelving may be the right choice for you, or you may be better off with wood shelves for a more rustic look.
• Retail dump bins. Dump bins are the perfect type of display if you are selling a lot of assorted products at a steep markdown.
• Display cases. Display cases are perfect for jewelry, sunglasses, and many other types of items that deserve to be in the spotlight. The cases both draw attention to items and protect them. While we are talking about displays, don’t forget to shop for tiered displays for your shoes, sweaters, and luxury items.
• Mannequins. It is easy to forget, but technically mannequins are just human-shaped display racks. You can set them up throughout your shop to give customers an idea what clothing would look like worn. Sometimes this is all it takes to get a customer to step inside your shop for the first time, or take an item into your dressing room to try on. Just make sure that whatever your mannequin is wearing is also in stock on your shelves and racks. It is a real pain when a customer wants to try on the mannequin’s display outfit and you have to undress and re-dress the mannequin. This is a hassle both for you and for shoppers.
• Signage. While you are shopping for floor retail displays, do not forget to look for signs. While signs can work great hanging from the ceiling or the walls, sometimes a floor sign makes more sense, especially next to a dump bin or another display which is lower to the ground.
Now you have a pretty good idea where to start when it comes to purchasing retail display racks and cases for your sales floor. There are numerous different options out there. Choose racks and shelves that fit with the décor and ambiance in your shop and showcase your products effectively, and your displays will translate into sales!
