While reading Christmas Ornament Storage Dos and Don’ts: Dos, hopefully you already came up with some useful Christmas ornament storage ideas, and picked up some Christmas ornament storage bins which will help you keep all of your treasured decorations safe and organized.
To further guide your efforts, in this article, I am going to share a few additional tips for what you should not do when storing your ornaments. Avoiding these mistakes will keep your ornaments in better condition.
• Do not purchase all the same size of containers/compartments. When you are at the store shopping for Christmas ornament storage containers, you may not think twice before grabbing a few matching bins which contain compartments that are all the same size. It is important to remember that at least some of your ornaments may be different sizes and shapes. So even if most of them will fit into identically-sized and shaped compartments, you should purchase at least a few bins that contain larger compartments to accommodate these unusual ornaments.
• Do not store fractured ornaments with those which are in sound condition. While many people are used to throwing away broken items, broken Christmas ornaments and decorations may sometimes be stored for years without a second thought. Usually, this is because there are special memories attached to these items. You do not have to throw out these ornaments or the memories associated with them. But you should store them separately so that they do not damage other decorations (for example, with sharp edges).
• Do not use cardboard boxes. In order to save time (and sometimes money), some people may think that they should simply rely on cardboard boxes for ornament storage instead of purchasing plastic Christmas ornament storage boxes. The problem with cardboard however is that it is easily crushed, and may also let in moisture. Being as ornaments are often stored in boxes which are piled high in an attic or basement, they can easily be damaged without adequate protection. Plastic can prevent these issues.
• Do not do the whole job on your own. Family members generally have more fun taking ornaments out of storage each year than putting them back, but there is no reason that you should have to do it all by yourself. Reward everyone for a job well done by going out to dinner somewhere nice or doing something else special as a family. You might also be able to barter to motivate your kids. If you usually buy them just one ornament each year for example, you can offer to purchase them two if they help.
You now know a number of dos and don’ts for storing Christmas ornaments at the end of the season. If you store your ornaments with care and follow some of these tips, it should be easier to find everything when you unpack them next year. You also should discover that all or most of them have survived intact and are in great shape for the new holiday season.
