Looking for Christmas ornament storage ideas, or trying to figure out what Christmas ornament storage containers to purchase? Before you try to determine how to put away your post Christmas clutter this year, it is worth taking some time to think about whether your current system of Christmas ornament storage is working for you. If it isn’t, it may be time for a new system.
To get you on the right track, we will be going over some dos and don’ts in this two-part series. Let’s get started what you should do when storing your Christmas ornaments each year.
• Do use plastic containers with separate compartments. Resist the urge to purchase containers without compartments. If you jumble all of your ornaments together, not only will they be difficult to pry apart next year, but they are also more likely to get damaged.
• Do make sure you are choosing plastic containers with lids. Equally important is to make sure that the bins which you buy have lids that can seal on top. The sealing is important for a couple of reasons. First of all, it makes it less likely that ornaments will fall out and get lost. Secondly, it protects them from moisture, which can be a problem in attics or basements where Christmas decorations typically end up after the season is over.
• Do put packing material around delicate ornaments. You might assume that each ornament being stored in its own compartment will provide enough protection to keep them safe. It certainly does go a long ways toward doing so, but it does not negate the need for tissue paper or bubble wrap for your more fragile ornaments.
• Do supervise children. On that same note, if kids are helping you to unpack or repack ornaments, make sure that you keep an eye on them so that they do not break anything fragile along the way.
• Do detach hooks and store them separately if you will be storing some ornaments in the same compartment. You might have some ornaments which are convenient store together in a bag instead of separately in different compartments. For example, growing up, we had a set of lace snowflakes which fit into this category. But it was important to remove the hooks from them and store those elsewhere so that they would not snag on the ornaments and damage them. Keep that in mind if you are storing similar ornaments.
• Do use a logical system for organizing Christmas decorations, and label your boxes with care. Finally, make sure that you do not lose perspective on the big picture when you are storing your ornaments. Have a labeling system for your ornament bins, and think about also keeping an inventory list as you go.
Following the Christmas ornament storage tips above should go a long ways toward keeping your ornaments neatly organized and safely stored until next year. But don’t miss out on Christmas Ornament Storage Dos and Don’ts: Don’ts for even more helpful tips.
