Chances are good that there are a lot of items that you only use part of the year—sometimes only for a month or two, depending on where you live and what kinds of holidays you celebrate.
If you live in a snowy climate, or even just a place that sometimes gets really cold over the winter, you probably have a lot of extra winter items you do not need lying around the rest of the year and taking up space.
If you live in a climate that gets really hot over the summer, you probably likewise have a lot of seasonal summer items you do not need during the cold months of the year.
On top of that, you probably have a lot of seasonal holiday items for Christmas, Halloween, Thanksgiving, and other days. You may use these items for a month or less, and then you need some place to put them the rest of the year.
What do you do with all these seasonal items right now? Some people simply leave them out all year. This is generally not the case with holiday décor, but it may be your current “solution” for storing winter clothes and blankets. It really is not much of one, since just a few coats and heavy blankets can take up a lot of space!
If you do not leave them out, you may end up stashing them away as quickly as possible when you decide you no longer need them for the rest of the year. For most people, this involves stuffing them inside some back closet or simply throwing them in the attic and hoping they don’t collect too much dust.
These are not great seasonal storage solutions, however. Simply leaving your winter and summer clothes and other items lying about isn’t storage at all. Stuffing them all in a closet doesn’t really work because you end up creating a mess. Oftentimes that mess is so bad you may avoid going into that closet for anything unless you absolutely have to. And if you made the mistake of shoving all the winter blankets in front of something you need … well, that’s not going to be any fun.
Why is tossing everything into the attic not among the best seasonal storage ideas? Think how dusty all your old winter gear was when you pulled it out last year. Do you really want to leave everything up there to collect dust again?
This is why no matter where you end up putting your seasonal items (the hall closet, the attic, the basement, etc.), you are definitely going to want to invest in a set of seasonal storage containers. These will ensure that your items stay neat and organized, that nothing gets misplaced or broken, and that nothing sits there gathering dust. The bins will keep everything out of the way and keep items accessible when you need them. I will talk about this more in Come Up With a Seasonal Storage System, Part 2!
