Do you put a lot of work into DIY home organization without getting the results you are looking for? Do you spend hours a week cleaning and moving stuff around, and still feel like you are living in the middle of a cluttered mess? It could be that you have been using a lot of great home organization tips but are still making common organizing mistakes as well. These mistakes can cause your house to continue looking cluttered no matter how hard you are working and no matter how many good ideas you are bringing into play. Hopefully reviewing some of these common errors, you will discover some wrong moves you may be making.
• Thinking “clean” or “neat” is the same thing as “organized.” A lot of newbie organizers think that all they have to do in order to be organized is put everything in tidy little piles and free up as much counter space as possible (and keep that counter space clean). But remember, organization is about putting things in logical, helpful places, not just putting them all in a pile! This is one of the biggest mistakes you can make.
• Not leaving anything on your counters. Another newbie error is to take as much stuff off of your countertops, tabletops, and other surfaces as possible, stuffing everything inside a drawer or cabinet. But you want to keep things you use regularly handy! And that means you should actually strive to keep the most useful items on your surfaces, not hidden away where you cannot reach them!
• Disorganized glass-fronted cabinets. If your cabinets are fronted by glass, everyone can see inside them. This can quickly lead to a cluttered look if your dishes tend to get disorganized inside. Try adding contact paper to the bottom, which will help your dishes to stay put and not slide into each other when you put things back in your cabinets. You may also want to choose dishes that fit in with your kitchen décor for a nice, seamless look.
• No organization by the door. Your mudroom and your entry hall are both areas in your home which can quickly turn into a cluttered mess without simple storage solutions like plastic organizing boxes for boots, scarves, bills, mail, and more. If you haven’t made organization in these areas almost automatic, growing clutter is a guarantee.
• A closet space which plays to image and not accessibility. It is easy to fall into the trap of organizing your closet according to colors or some other aesthetic criteria, but you really want to make sure you are keeping your most important items in easy reach. Items you use less often should go in the back or on the upper shelves.
I hope these home organization ideas help you to get your house less cluttered. These tips will assist you in upgrading your organizational schemes so they not only reduce your mess, but keep important items easily accessible
