If you are someone who puts a lot of time and energy into getting organized, but still find yourself feeling disorganized, it could be that you are making common home organizing errors. In our first installment, I talked about the importance of choosing organizational schemes that make sense and offer convenience and logic, not just “neatness.” I talked about organizing your kitchen cabinets and counters, your closet and your entry hall. Now let’s look at some more common mistakes and home organization ideas to remedy them!
• No organization inside your plastic organizing boxes and bins. One common newbie mistake is to think you are “organized” if you just throw a bunch of stuff into a set of plastic storage containers and walk away. But all you have done is transfer your mess from your floor, countertop, or closet into a set of boxes. One of the best home organization tips is to utilize smaller containers inside larger ones. Make use of jars, cups, tins, and even smaller plastic boxes. Buy plastic containers with divided storage. You will be glad you did!
• Buying bins without any purpose. While plastic bins are the most versatile storage supplies you can buy, you want to be careful that you do not buy a bunch of them with no specific use in mind. All too often, newbie organizers buy dozens of bins without any organizing plans for them, and just end up with a pile of plastic clutter. Make sure you actually figure out exactly which types of bins you need and roughly how many, and then purchase them.
• Not labeling your plastic bins. While clear plastic boxes help you to see what you have inside your storage containers, you still may have a hard time seeing the contents clearly. To that end, you should always label your plastic bins clearly with what you have inside, even if they are transparent. Make sure you arrange them so that you can see the labels at a glance.
• Doing nothing about your loose cords. One of the biggest causes of clutter in your home office or entertainment center is a lot of loose cords. Since we usually accumulate electronics slowly over time, we often do not notice that we are also accumulating cords. But once you corral them by tying them together and hiding them, you will notice the difference.
• Noncohesive collections. While collections can look wonderful on your shelves, you want to make sure you group like items together or use some kind of a theme for your arrangements. Random assortments look like clutter, and do no justice to your collectibles. Scattering these objects around your home can also look quite messy.
