When you spend a lot of time, energy, and money organizing but do not get the results you are hoping for, it probably means you are making organizing mistakes. The best home organizing ideas in the world will fall flat if you are continually compromising your efforts with poor organizational practices. In parts one and two, we talked about the importance of organizing vs. just making things “neat,” and we talked about common mistakes with the kitchen, closet, entryway, cords, and collections. We also talked about mistakes with plastic organizing bins. Now let’s talk about a few more common errors.
• Displaying items you own which are in poor repair. This includes old paperback books with the covers peeling off, old clothing items with holes, and so on. There is nothing wrong with owning these items—they may be some of your most cherished possessions. But they will add to the image of clutter in your home, and may give the impression that things are out-of-repair when they really are not.
• Too much décor. While décor obviously brings some warmth, color, and personality to your home, too much of a good thing can turn into clutter. You want at least some open, unused space in your home. Space serves its own purpose just by being there.
• No color scheme. Rooms which have random, clashing colors look disorganized, whereas rooms with simple color schemes and just a few main hues have a tendency to look a lot neater. This is one of the best home decorating organizing tips you will ever read!
• Rearranging without a reason. Like tidying without organizing (creating neat looking piles which do not serve any purpose), rearranging without a reason does nothing but keep you busy. It can make you feel productive even when you really aren’t, which actually can make your problem even worse. You end up expending a lot of energy moving things around, but nothing actually gets organized. Instead, you simply change the orientation of your mess. One of the most helpful home organization declutter tips is to stop doing this outright. Instead, sit down with a piece of paper and a pencil and actually think about your organizational needs. Draft up a real plan which has purpose, and then go back to rearranging only when you know you will create real, meaningful improvement.
• Unhelpful furniture. If you live in a small space, you need furniture that will help you with your storage needs. Opt for beds with space under them, nightstands that include drawers, and coffee tables you can open up for storage. Don’t purchase furniture that looks nice but doesn’t serve dual purposes!
Now that you’ve read all three parts of our series on home organization mistakes and easy remedies, you should be able to figure out some of the errors which you have been making in your own home. Once you stop making these mistakes and substitute in better organizational practices, you will finally start achieving the results that you are after.
