1. Start out by choosing a location in your house with your child’s help. Some children do best studying when they are accountable—seated at a table in your kitchen or living room perhaps. Others do better with quiet and privacy, like in a bedroom or basement or another area of the house with few distractions. Also consider noise or silence. Some students will do better with music, so consider providing a stereo.

2. Pull together supplies your child will need, like pens, pencils, erasers, crayons, markers, rulers, scissors, a pencil sharpener, a calculator, and useful books like a dictionary and a thesaurus. Your child’s school supply list is a good starting point for supplies. Also find out if there are any special supplies your child particularly needs (some children may want a certain kind of calculator, mechanical pencils, or a particular type of coloring pencil for example).

3. Order a set of clear plastic bins which you can place the supplies in, and organize them in a logical fashion. If you work with your child to do this, that’s even better, since your child will have an easier time working with a system if he or she helps design it. Pencils and pencils and other small supplies can go into a compartmentalized plastic container or they can be placed inside an open plastic container. Another bin can contain books, another your child’s papers, and so on.
