Do you have an area of your house that isn’t going to use? It could be anything—just a narrow wall in a mudroom, entry hall, or kitchen. All you need is a few feet of space. If you have that, you can set up a household organization center! A household organization center is a great tactic for keeping all the members of your family on the same page. It is quick and easy to prepare, and you will find it works wonders!
What You Need
All you need to do this is a simple system of plastic organizing bins and a table to set them on. You may also want to get some wall-mounted baskets. More bins can go under the table if you would like. Get some labels so that you can mark your plastic containers with lids and your baskets and keep everything clear.
Here are some ideas for your household organization center:
• Have organizational bins and baskets for each member of your family. You can label these by name, and even consider color-coding them so that everyone can see their bins at a glance. In these bins and baskets, you can put incoming mail, school papers, bills, and other important documents.
• Have a single wall bin for mail that is outgoing. That way everybody’s mail gets sent at the same time. Make sure there is a space on the table or counter for packages, and that you check it before you take out the mail. On your calendar, you can let everyone know when you will be running to the post office. This helps your family to get their mail ready in time.
• Include bins for financial transactions like bills that need to be paid, taxes, receipts, and more. Depending on how your household is set up, you may want to put bills in separate boxes for different recipients, but if you all pay your bills together as a family, you can have a bin specifically for bills. Another bin can be used for receipts, and another for tax paperwork.
• Lists, calendars, and schedules. How does your family organize time? Consider putting a big calendar on the wall that lists important dates and events. You can also put up to-do lists and task schedules for cleaning, school, and other responsibilities. With these lists and calendars, everyone in the family can see at a glance what everybody else needs to get done. This helps to prevent scheduling problems with appointments and so forth.
A household organization center is incredibly easy to set up. All you need are a few bins or baskets and about an hour of time to get everything in place. Once you have everything ready, bring your family around to your organization center and show them how it works. When you do this, you will likely see dramatic results right away. You will be able to save time, cut back on confusion, and increase the efficiency of your entire household.
