Can’t figure out how to get started decluttering your house? There are dozens of quick and easy decluttering ideas you can try, but I am going to share one with you from my own experience, and that is to just declutter one item.
I’ll be honest. I love decluttering and organizing, but I am also an incredibly busy person. As a result, I spend more time providing other people with decluttering and organizing tips and ideas than I do actually tackling my own clutter at home.
That means that I have some seriously intimidating clutter to work through! And I too have trouble getting started.
This weekend, however, I had a great experience. There are some potted plants along one of my walls, and one of them was on a large plastic tray. The tray itself was in bad shape—covered in dirt with a crack running through it.
I decided to replace it with a new tray, this time a much smaller one. The actual goal of doing this had nothing to do with decluttering. I just wanted to clear a space so my cat would have an easier time getting around.
What a transformation, as it turned out! You wouldn’t think opening up that little bit of floor space could make such a huge difference, but that single action totally made the entire space look different.
Encouraged by the result, I ended up moving a couple more small objects out of the way, and then the space really opened up.
It looks like I went on a massive decluttering spree and did a lot of work, but I really didn’t. I no longer look over there and think, “pile of clutter.” I just see a neat arrangement of plants. The effect was almost magical.
So if you do not have a lot of time to declutter your entire home, maybe you don’t have to. Maybe you just need to get strategic about it and focus your efforts on a few small changes which will end up making a world of difference.
This weekend when you have a few minutes to spare, take a look around your house. See if you can spot that one single object that you can remove which will make a major impact. It does not necessarily have to be something huge, and it may be something you rarely or never think about. Remember, all I got rid of was a plant tray.
If you can find that object and get it out of the way, you will probably find yourself releasing a breath of relief. And like me, you may feel encouraged to do a little bit more—maybe relocate or get rid of a couple other objects.
If all you do is that just once a week, it should make a big difference over time. Clutter has as much to do with perception as it does reality. If you do not have the time and energy to tackle the reality, tackle the perception. Transform how you see your home, and you will end up transforming your home as well!
