Summer this year has really whizzed by, hasn’t it? It is hard to believe, but the fall retail season is coming up fast, so this is right about when you should be thinking and planning for your fall retail window displays.

If you’re having a hard time coming up with fall store window display ideas, you are in the right place. I love coming up with retail window display ideas, especially with a seasonal theme. I have done some searching around, and here are some of the trends and ideas that I have discovered for autumn.

• Autumn leaves. While some retail window display trends come and go, others are perennial. One perfect example which will never go out of vogue is autumn leaves. There are so many different ways that you can work fall leaves into your displays. You can go with real leaves from outside or you can use faux leaves. You can hang them from the ceiling, or you can use them to coat the floor as if it were the ground outside. They add a splash of color to any retail display.

• Fall holidays. Another timeless theme which you can always rely on is either of the big autumn holidays, Halloween and Thanksgiving. Just make sure that if you go with a holiday theme for your retail window every autumn, you are changing it up each year and not simply rehashing last year’s window. You may not realize it, but many loyal customers actually do remember last year’s window, and are hoping to see something new and equally amazing this year.

• Minimalist colors. When you are putting together an autumn retail display, your first instinct is probably to use as many beautiful warm colors as you can to evoke the festive fall atmosphere. This is of course a wonderful idea, and it always has a lovely effect. But one popular trend this year is to go with minimalist colors, for example a monochromatic scheme using simply white and orange, or one or two other fall colors. This is a great way to stand out from all the other stores on the block. It also steers you clear of the temptation to clutter up your display with too many conflicting colors.

• Pinecones. If every other store in your row has fall leaves in their retail window, you might want to do something different. If you are trying to come up with a simple alternative which is very eye-catching, you can try hanging pinecones in your window instead of autumn leaves. The overall effect is very similar, but it is far less likely that anyone else selling in your area will have done it.

Hopefully you now have some idea on how you can start planning your fall retail display. These are not the only great ideas I stumbled across while doing my research however, so I suggest that you also read on to my next article, Fall Retail Display Ideas, Part 2.
