Are you setting up a homework station to help your young scholar succeed with school projects? While you are deciding on homework station organization ideas, you will also need to purchase homework station supplies. Let’s break it down so you get everything you need for your son or daughter!

• Furniture. When you are setting up the work area, you will need some kind of a hard, flat surface. This could be a desk, a table, a counter, or anything else with plenty of space. You will also need good lighting (a desk lamp is a great purchase). Storage drawers can be helpful, but are not necessary if you purchase plastic containers for school supplies. Each child should have his or her own special area to work where distractions are minimized. Make sure there is enough space for a laptop or desktop computer.

• You will need supplies to organize paperwork. These can include three-ring binders and envelopes, folders, file drawers, and plastic containers for paperwork. In/Out trays are also helpful for current assignments, and can help students to keep track of new assignments as well as those they need to remember to turn in. Nothing is worse than finishing an assignment only to receive a mark down for forgetting to turn it in on-time! Another helpful idea is an In/Out tray for documents that you need to review or sign and which your child needs to turn in.

• General school supplies. Along with furniture and organizational supplies for your child’s homework station, you will also need to load up on general school supplies. Along with everything on your child’s supply list, you may need to purchase some extras. Your child will need plenty of loose leaf paper, printer paper and graph paper. Also make sure there is a dictionary and thesaurus on hand, a calculator, protractor, compass and ruler, lots of art supplies, and some spare poster board. Every child can also always use more paper clips and staples.

• Time-organizing supplies. Along with clear plastic bins and other organizational supplies that help your young scholar to keep assignments in order, time-organizing supplies can also be helpful. Your child will need some kind of a scheduling book to carry around. The school may provide one. Even so, it can be helpful to see everything clearly on the wall, which is why a dry erase board is a very handy supply. This helps your child to see at a glance everything that needs to be done in the next week and over the long term. A wall calendar that provides room for notes can also be very helpful for both of you.

Make a shopping list and hit the stores with your child, and make sure that you get everything he or she comes up with as well. Every student has unique needs when it comes to studying and homework space. Your child’s suggestions are important for this reason; your goal as a parent is to help your child to discover his or her own style for studying. Each child will find his or her own path to success!
