If you will be hiring a professional home organizer, you will need to shop around to make sure that you are picking the best person for your needs. In How to Choose a Professional Organizer, Part 1, I went over the following suggestions:

1. First, understand what you hope to accomplish by hiring a professional organizer.
2. Read reviews and ask for referrals.
3. Choose an organizer that specializes in the area you need to organize.
4. Pick an organizer who can work with someone with your specific psychological needs.

Now I want to share a few more tips for hiring a home organizer.

5. Go with an organizer who asks a lot of questions.

When shopping for a home organizer service, your natural inclination will be to ask a lot of questions. But it is just as important to listen to the questions that the home organizers you are interviewing ask you.

Those who ask a lot of questions are working hard to understand your needs, and are not assuming that there is a one-size-fits-all solution for organizing. Those who do not ask a lot of questions may not offer you service which is completely personalized to your needs.

6. The organizer should not judge you.

Some people get nervous about hiring a home organizer because they worry that they will be judged for their mess. This is an understandable concern, so you should choose someone who will not have a judgmental attitude about anything in your home or life. They are there to help you out, not make you feel bad.

7. Ask the organizer’s underlying philosophy, and make sure that it is a match for your values.

I touched upon this briefly in the previous article. If you have a lot of knickknacks that you value, you will not want to hire a minimalist who thinks that clutter is some kind of personal failing. If you practice Feng Shui, you should not hire someone who thinks that it is all a lot of mystical nonsense.

The person you work with should understand and respect your underlying life philosophy as pertains to organizing, and simply help you to build on that. They are not there to erase what works for you and replace it with something that will not help you feel at home and function comfortably.

8. Finally, do not forget about price.

Prices can range quite a bit for home and office organizing services. Figure out what your budget is for your project, and make sure that it is realistic for your needs. Choose someone who can help you without breaking the bank. If you cannot afford to finance all of the organizing projects that you want to take care of right now, decide what your priorities are and budget accordingly.

Because hiring a professional organizer can be expensive, it should not be undertaken lightly. With these tips on your side however, you should be able to get the best bang for your buck.
