Trying to figure out how you can clean your plastic food containers effectively? It can be quite a challenge to get rid of stubborn grease or remove tomato stains from plastic. You can actually get most of these stains out using regular dish soap, but many people prefer to use a method which is completely natural. Plastic is porous, and tends to absorb whatever you use to clean it. This means you may wish to avoid bleach. You have a few options for natural cleaning, but one of the best is vinegar.
Getting stains out of plastic bins with vinegar is quite easy. You can use white vinegar or apple cider vinegar; both are effective.
There are a couple of methods you can use to clean your plastic food containers using vinegar:
1. Apply the vinegar directly to the stains you are trying to remove and scrub vigorously. Rinse out the vinegar with hot water and check to see if the stains are removed. If they are still present, do another round.
2. Alternately, you can combine a tablespoon of vinegar with a cup of water and soak the inside of your container. If you have a lid with stains, you can do the same thing; just soak it inside a larger plastic food container for freezer. Wait a few minutes while the vinegar loosens up grease and disinfects your container and lid. Then rinse using hot water. Repeat this process if necessary.
If you have hard water stains on your plastic containers, you will find that vinegar also does a great job removing them.
Whichever method you decide to use to get grease stains out of plastic containers using vinegar, the trick is to be thorough. If you decide to scrub the stains directly, put some serious effort into it. If you decide to soak the container, then make sure that you wait a full 5-10 minutes before you attempt to rinse and see the results.
If after a couple of rounds with vinegar you still have not achieved the results that you are looking for, you can try cleaning your containers again using another natural method like salt and lemon juice or baking soda. You can also try using regular dish soap. A mild detergent may not be a natural choice, but it is still a safe one, and it can be quite effective if you are using a high-quality soap.
After you are done washing your plastic food containers, make sure that you dry them right away with a towel rather than leaving them to air dry. This will prevent hard water stains from forming. In the future, you may also want to avoid storing certain foods inside plastic containers, particularly acidic foods like tomato sauces and pastes.
