Have you made any New Year’s resolutions yet? This New Year, why not make the resolution to get organized? Most of us complain throughout the year about how hard it is to find what we’re looking for. Clutter accumulates around us, not only because we haven’t cleaned house yet, but also because we do not have a smart home organization plan. This year, make it your resolution to get your household in order and keep it that way. By the end of the year, you will be grateful you did.
How should you get started? Here are some steps to take:
1.Make a home organization planner.
You may think of a planner as something that is used only to organize time, but you can also use it to organize space. As you de-clutter your home and take stock of your possessions, you can take notes in your planner about what you have and where it is at. As you come up with a new home organization plan, you can write down the details in the planner. That way if you lose track of something, you can flip open your planner and know immediately where to look.
2.Spring cleaning – clear out that clutter!
Your next move should be to put everything you don’t need into plastic bags, and then take those to the thrift store. If you think a garage sale has potential, wait until the weather starts warming up. It doesn’t make sense to hoard or try to organize things you don’t need, but you should never waste something someone else might need either.
3.Buy supplies for organization.
Next you will need to stock up on home organization supplies. Look for general supplies when possible that you can easily use for multiple purposes. Wire organizer cubes are a great choice for lightweight, versatile shelving, and they are perfect for any room in the house. Plastic containers with lids are another excellent choice for organizing your house. Like wire shelving, plastic bins are lightweight and can easily be used for many different storage tasks. They can be repurposed if necessary, and they can be stacked up on your wire shelving units.
4.Organize one area at a time.
One trick to organizing your household is not to let yourself be overwhelmed. Tackle just one room at a time, and one part of each room at a time. Organize the kitchen first for example, and just the kitchen. But break it down into areas—the refrigerator and freezer, then the cabinets, then the pantry, then the drawers. Next you might tackle your bedroom. Do the closets, then the drawers, and so on.
Organizing your household will take some time; it isn’t something that will be done in an afternoon. But if you keep working on it throughout the year, you should find that by this time next year, your home is a much more orderly and pleasant place to be. You’ll spend a lot less time searching for things and wading through stuff you don’t need, and more time enjoying the special place you’ve created for yourself and your family.
