One of the most challenging little organizational tasks for a lot of peoples’ homes is the medicine cabinet. Your medicine cabinet probably isn’t terribly cluttered, but it can be hard to keep your supplies in order because the space is so small, and a lot of the items in your medicine cabinet are probably floating around without containers. Add to that the tendency for water to get into the medicine cabinet, resulting in rust and mold, and you have an organizational headache. How can you organize your medicine cabinet? Here are some steps you can take to get the job done fast, and prevent clutter, mold, and other annoyances in the future.

1. Clean out your medicine cabinet.

Start by cleaning out your medicine cabinet entirely. Remove everything from inside, set it aside and wipe down the interior to get rid of mold. Wait for your cabinet to dry and air out so that you have a clean surface to work with. Then go through your medicine cabinet supplies and get rid of expired prescriptions and ointments. Throw away damaged containers and containers of things you do not really need so you can organize your medicines that you do need.

2. Rethink your bathroom organization.

This is a good time to ask yourself whether anything in your medicine cabinet belongs somewhere else in your bathroom such as under your sink or in a drawer. If your entire bathroom could use a makeover, this is a great time to organize your bathroom. Do one task at a time if you can—otherwise you may become overwhelmed.

3. Buy organizational supplies.

A number of organizational supplies can come in handy when it is time to organize your medicine cabinet. You should pick up some small plastic containers to use to contain items you do not want to get wet, and do not necessarily need in immediate reach. You can get acrylic organizer trays for items you may need to grab in an instant. Purchase small bottles which are leakproof if necessary and labeling materials that will resist water damage. Plastic bins are perfect though for preventing water-related issues.

4. Stay organized over the long run.

One of the tough aspects of organization is staying organized after you get organized. Many times, people get their medicine cabinets in order only to find themselves with a mess again a few weeks later. Remind yourself to toss old medications and get rid of empty bottles, as well as to avoid storing items in the medicine cabinet which do not really belong there.

An organized medicine cabinet is not only convenient; it’s essential. In many households, it may be of critical importance during an emergency to have readily accessible medical supplies which are clean, dry, and undamaged. Taking an hour to get your medicine cabinet in order can pay off in huge ways later during a critical moment. You will be very thankful that you took the time and effort when you had the time!
