Plastic Bin Decorating Idea: Weave Ribbons or Fabric

Plastic bins may be useful, but are they pretty? Usually not. They generally look quite bland, if not downright unattractive. That might be fine in your garage, but what about the plastic storage containers for clothes, food and more in your bedroom, kitchen, bathroom, living room, and other area of the house? You have gone out of your way to decorate these rooms to make them look beautiful. Why not do the same with your bins? If you are looking for cool ideas, I have already shared quite a few on our blog: decoupage, chalkboard paint, and more. Now I have a new one—weaving using ribbons or fabric!

To do this project to decorate plastic storage bins, you need plastic totes which have slots or holes in it. You can find bins like these for sale, but you also can make them yourself simply by cutting or drilling holes into a regular plastic bin. Makes sure that you drill the holes at even intervals. You should create several rows of them, wrapping clear around the bin.

The other supply you need for this project is either several long ribbons, or several long scraps of fabric. Each creates a different look, so it is up to you what you want to go for aesthetically. Going with just one color can look great, but several alternating hues can look spectacular as well. You will need a pair of scissors too.

This plastic bin decorating idea is ridiculously easy in that all you need to do is weave each ribbon through each row of holes you have created in your bin. Once you manage to work a ribbon all the way around the bin, just tie the two ends together, preferably at a corner. This results in a cute little bow. Once you have finished weaving and tying all of your ribbons, you should have a neat little row of bows.

Alternately, if you do not want bows, and you do not want the ends of your ribbons/strips of fabric showing, an alternate idea would be to simply sew the ends together. If you do this inside your bins, you can hide your stitching (it will still be visible inside the bins of course, just not from the outside).

One benefit of this idea to decorate plastic containers is that it is fun, fast and easy. Not only does it look great when you are finished, but you can do it quickly and with negligible effort, assuming you have a pre-drilled bin. If you do not, it could be a more time-consuming project, but still very enjoyable, with minimal supplies required.

So go ahead and give this idea a try! You will find that there are a lot of ways you can vary and customize this project to create the imaginative look you want for your plastic storage totes. When they are done, you can proudly display them, knowing that your plastic bins are now a complement to your home décor!
