We are not quite to springtime yet, but it is never too soon to start thinking about how you are going to tackle spring cleaning. In fact, this is a great time to draft up a spring cleaning schedule and checklist. But you don’t have to stop at cleaning! You should also make the decision this year to declutter and organize as you go along. Why? Well, you are already doing all the hard work of pulling everything out of your shelves, drawers, and closets, so this is the best time to get it all organized before putting it back.

To help you out, here is a spring cleaning organizing checklist you can use to finally organize your home thoroughly this year:

• Organize all your closets. This is probably the single hardest organizational task for most people, but that is exactly why this is the year you should get yourself determined to get it done. Tackle your bedroom closets and don’t forget to get the hall closets while you are at it. If you are dealing with a lot of clutter, make sure to get rid of anything you do not need along the way. You may also want to consider adding in new shelving or rods in your closet to make better use of your space. And never underestimate the difference that a few plastic storage bins with covers can make.

• Organize your drawers. It is time to finally get your bedroom drawers, kitchen drawers, bedroom drawers, and home office drawers sorted! And there is nothing quite like plastic storage containers with dividers to accomplish that task. These are great for everything from hair clips to binder clips!

• Organize your shelves. Do you have so many books and knick-knacks on your shelves you cannot see any free space? If so, that can create a really cluttered look. Free up some space and leave it open, and you will get a much calmer feel from a room. Come up with a rotation system for your keepsakes. Store the ones which are not in display in plastic containers. You can rotate books too!

• Organize your files. This is a great time to finally organize all the paperwork in your home office. Figure out what you need to have handy this year, what you can put in deep storage, and what you can shred.

• Organize your garage tools and more. Tired of that mess in your garage? It is tempting to skip this part of the house when you are cleaning, but even if you don’t have any surfaces to wipe down, you should do it anyway. Spend that time organizing your tools, yard supplies, and outdoor toys.

It is a big commitment to turn spring cleaning this year into cleaning and organizing. But if you make that commitment, it will pay off through the rest of the year—and the years to come. So go for it! Make 2017 the year that you finally get organized!
