Black Friday has come and gone, and chances are good you now have a growing pile of disorganized presents somewhere in your house—or worse, strewn haphazardly all around. Before that mess gets out of control, you should rein it in by setting up a station for wrapping and mailing your holiday gifts. It is time to organize holiday shopping – and that includes shopping for wrapping and mailing supplies.
Get a few plastic bins for wrapping paper, bows, gift tags, and mail. Get them set up somewhere convenient in your home, like your holiday planning center.
Next, check around for any gift wrapping supplies you might have left over from last year. Odds are good you still have some wrapping paper, bows, and tags. That just reduces the amount of materials you have to buy this year, which saves you time and money.
Make a list of supplies you will need to fill any gaps left over from last year. Plan a trip to the store, but before you go, gather tools like scissors, tape, and pens. Also collect your mailing supplies. Do you have enough envelopes, or do you need to purchase more with this year’s cards? What about stamps? How about tissue paper, bubble wrap and other miscellaneous mailing supplies?
Purchase everything you need, and then sort your supplies into your plastic tub organizers. Plastic bins with lids work best for a holiday gift station since they contain small items (like gift tags) which might otherwise get lost. You may even find that plastic bins with compartments are useful for keeping everything from getting mixed together.
Where should you put all these bins and supplies? I recommend that you pick a quiet room that no one uses all that often in your house, like a guest room. Set up in there and lock the door when you are inside wrapping gifts. You do not want your kids to come strolling in while you are wrapping their presents.
You can leave a number of your supplies laying out in plain view if you choose a room that is out of the way. Presents which you have not wrapped yet should be concealed however. Under the bed is a good location for them, as is inside a closet. Get a large plastic storage tub for unwrapped presents. That way you can stow them all quickly when you need to and pull them all out simultaneously to wrap.
If you do an effective job setting up your wrapping station, you will create a system which makes it fast and easy to wrap your gifts, write your cards, and prepare your packages for mailing.
The easier it is to wrap your gifts, the less tempted you will be to put it off until the last minute. Wouldn’t it be great if this Christmas Eve, you can actually relax and spend time with your family instead of shutting yourself up in the spare room for hours frantically wrapping last-minute gifts? With a holiday wrapping and mailing station, it is possible!
