The holidays are a time to relax with your family and share in the festive cheer of the season … at least in theory. In reality, relaxing might be the last thing you will be doing during the fall and winter this year (or any year). Holidays are fun, but they are also a ton of work.
One of the reasons that the holidays are so chaotic is that our usual organization falls by the wayside. We suddenly have an abundance of new chores and responsibilities to see to. We have parties to plan, gifts to buy and wrap, and recipes to make. With so many activities filling up our calendars, we have a hard time keeping up with those holiday tasks and our regular chores.
If you are looking for holiday organizing ideas for smooth sailing this season, you have come to the right place.
One of the best holiday organizing tips is to create a holiday planning center. This is simply an area of your home which you set up and dedicate entirely to holiday planning. While you can do this at your family command center (if you have one), that typically is not the best idea. Why? You will probably want to keep your present wrapping station in the same location, and obviously you want that to be behind a closed door.
My suggestion is to use a spare room or some other space in the house which does not get a lot of use. The attic is another option which might suffice. You could also use a hall closet, but this might be a little inconvenient. You just want to keep little ones from stumbling into their presents.
The following items can be stored in your holiday organizing station:
• Materials for wrapping gifts
• Holiday cards and supplies for organizing holiday cards
• Mailing labels, stamps, pens, and other basic supplies
• Your holiday address book
• Your holiday planner binder (if you do not have one of these, you should make one; it will really help you out)
• Holiday recipes and cookbooks
• Magazines and catalogs
• Wish lists and gift lists
• Holiday décor which you have had a chance to pull out of storage, but have not yet gotten around to setting up around the house
• Holiday organizing checklists
Getting organized for the holidays is no easy task, but it is worth it to get everything set up in one place. That way you will not have to run around all over the house to get what you need, and you will be able to see what you need to do in one central location. This will save you a lot of time and will prevent you from losing the supplies you need at the critical moment when you need them. If you take just an hour or two to do this at the start of the holiday season, you will find party planning, gift giving, holiday mail and other festive tasks are a lot easier—and more enjoyable too!
