Running out of room in your craft room? Don’t even have a craft room? If you have the space out back, you can convert a backyard shed into a craft room. A craft shed is similar to the idea of a “she shed,” except of course it isn’t exclusive to female crafters. Don’t have a backyard shed to convert? Search for “build a craft shed plans” and you will be able to tackle the project from the ground up.

What should you know about organizing a craft shed?

• Backyard sheds, even larger ones, are still pretty small, so you cannot expect to have a lot of free space to work with. For that reason, it is best to avoid free standing shelves and other units which take up a lot of floor space. Try to use wall shelving units. Hang a few pegboards, and attach wire shelves to that.

• Make good use of your ceiling! Attach hooks and hang plastic baskets from overhead with additional crafting supplies and tools. This will free up a lot of space for your projects.

• Try to keep some floor space free, not just so you have somewhere to walk, but also to help reduce the feeling of clutter. It is hard to work in a cluttered environment, because it feels cramped and distracting.

• Lighting is key. Since you will be doing small, detailed work in your craft shed, you want to make sure that you have ample lighting for your workspace. That might mean adding a window over your work desk, or it might even mean running wires to your craft shed so that you can add interior light. If you do a lot of your crafting after the sun goes down, this will be a must.

Plastic storage totes are your friends! Plastic craft organizer boxes are perfect for holding beads, scrapbooking supplies, sewing supplies, and so much more. They help you to free up space and also remember where everything is. Tip-out craft bins make it easy to reach and get what you need while you are in the middle of a project.

• Your craft shed should reflect your personality. Since this is a place where you will be working on your artistic projects, you want it to be a space that will uplift and inspire you to do your best work.

Building a craft shed or even converting a backyard shed is a lot of work, so be prepared to make that your main project for a while! Once you start getting your craft shed in order, though, you will find that it is a wonderful place to retreat to where you can not only have the space you need at last for your crafts, but where you can also have the privacy, peace, and quiet you need to concentrate. When your craft shed is ready to use, don’t be surprised if you become far more productive and start creating even more amazing crafts than you ever did before!
